Overview

Energeia has one of the most comprehensive datasets in Australia covering the electricity, natural gas, transportation and waste sectors, which we offer to our clients and leverage in our consulting work. We used this data to develop our in-house forecasts, which are more granular and tailored than those offered in the public domain, to give our clients a strategic advantage.

Technology driven change is both a key opportunity and challenge for the energy and transport sectors. Energeia produces proprietary, market focused research reports on key sector issues including vehicle electrification, smart metering, smart grids, microgrids, fuel cells, solar PV and strage.

The timing and impact of emerging energy and transport technologies is intertwined with their future cost. Energeia develops its own, proprietary estimates of future technology costs to give our clients a strategic edge.

Overview

Energeia offers a range of consulting services to the elctricity, natural gas and transport sectors across our decarbonisation, decentralisation and technical practice areas.

Decarbonisation of the electricity system depends upon transitioning to 100% renewable energy and/or zero carbon fuels. Energeia offers bottom-up modelling of drop-in replacement, zero carbon fuel costs ove time, as well as behind-the-meter to fuel supply modelling, including 100% renewables integration, long-duration storage and virtual power plants.

Achieving zero carbon requires moving away from fossil forms of natural gas, while managing the associate costs on the electricity and transport systems. Energeia offers a highly granular, bottom-up modelling capability to assess energy efficiency, electrification and zero carbon feedstock pathways to a zero carbon future.

Transport is the second highest source of emissions, with long-lived, high cost stock. Energeia helps clients identify least cost transport decarbonisation using our comprehensive model of all transport modes and fuel sources, including green hydrogen, electricity, renewable diesel and renewable natural gas.

Waste streams can be changed from greenhouse gas emitting to zero carbon energy sources. Energeia has developed a detailed understanding of the options for achieving negative emissions in this sector and their respective costs and benefits using our whole-of-system electricity modelling suite.

Leading policymakers know that decentralization offers customers greater choice, increases competition, lower emissoins and higher reliability when done well. Decentralisation is one of our key strengths, and Energeia is regularly engaged by state and Commonwealth policy makers to identify and justify optimal policy frameworks and settings.

Distributed energy resources make sense where they are more economic than the centralized system. Energeia’s proprietary modelling of future technology costs and uptake help our clients better understand their potential impacts and associated costs and benefits.

The key challenge for policymakers, regulators and industry regarding distributed energy resouces is how to best integrate them into the grid and wholesale markets. Energeia uses its integrated, behind-the-meter to fuel system modelling capabilities to identify and quantify least cost pathways, and thier associated costs and benefits.

Investment in distributed energy resources is expected by the Electricity Networks Association to equal that of the centralised system over the period to 2050. Energeia helps our clients position for this sizeable growth opporunity using a combination of our demand forecasting, competitor benchmarking and business model design and implementation planning services.

Energeia offers the full range of typical consulting and technical services to our clients including load forecasting, tariff design, business case development and electricity, natural gas and transport system modelling.

Load forecasting is rapidly evolving due to technology driven changes in the electricity, natural gas, transportation and waste sectors. Energeia supports our client’s transition to the latest technologies using benchmarking, primary and secondary research, and leveraging our own, best practice forecasting capabilities.

Emerging technology is rapidly making traditional tariff designs and design techniques obsolete, and requires new toolkits and techniques to avoid uneconomic bypass. Energeia specialises in customer behavior informed rate design, grounded in strong economic theory and industry best practice.

A compelling business case requires demonstrating strong evidence of a positive net benefit, and careful consideration of the associated risks and senstivities. Energeia has been engaged to analyse major, multi-billion dollar businesses cases on behalf of Commonwealth, state and Board level clients regarding key decarbonisation, electrification and industry investments.

Understanding the impacts of a policy on the electricity, natural gas or transport sectors increasingly requires an integrated approach due to the growing interdepencies between them. Energeia offers one of the only inter-sector integrated modelling capabilities, helping our clients ensure they are able to see the full picture.

Overview

Energeia has developed a range of proprietary software and tools to support our decarbonisation, decentralisation and technical practice areas. We also offer bespoke tool development to our clients, leveraging our software code bases and best practice toolkits on behalf of our clients.

Utility Simulator (uSim) software uses agent based simulation techniques to model customer electricity, natural gas and transporation usage and its impacts on a scenario basis. It has been applied in some of the highest profile industry studies over the last 10 years including the $100m Smart Grid, Smart City and Network Transformation Roadmaps studies.

Wholesale Market Simulator (wSim) is a production cost, capacity expansion software capable of integrated modelling of virtual-power-plan development and operation when used in conjunction with uSim. Together wSim and uSim provide a holistic, end-to-end modelling solution that covers electricity, natural gas and transport sectors.

Microgrid Simulator (mgSim) models the costs, reliability and emissions of a microgrid system based on its load profile and the costs of technology and fuel sources. It has been applied across Australia, looking at the offgrid and fringe-of-grid markets, as well as to embedded networks.

Transportation Simulator models all major transportation modes in terms of stock, turnover, technology upake, costs, energy consumption and emissions. It has been applied at the national level to forecast emissions across air, marine, rail and ground transportation modes.

Energeia is often engaged by clients to develop bespoke software or tools due to our in-house software and tool development IP and capabilities. Bespoke tools we have developed for clients include a microgrid simulation tool, DER, electrification and energy efficiency policy impact assessment tools, and an embedded network quotation tool.

"Energeia’s technical and financial expertise, combined with a solid understanding of the regulatory framework meant it delivered robust and relevant technical advice to the AER."

Mark McLeish, Director, Operating Expenditure Team, AER

‘‘The present contretemps is nothing more than a contest between two professional opinions…, one of which [Energeia] is reasoned and supportable and the other of which does not rise much above mere assertion.’’

Justice Mansfield, Australian Competition Tribunal
